First it was fro-yo, then it was cupcakes, now it’s macaroons! Bakeries have been baking up French macaroons to keep up with the changing fads. This famous, fu-fu bakery has 3 locations Yountville, Las Vegas and New York. It’s definitely become a destination amongst tourists in either of these cities.

The soft chewy sandwich cookies come in a variety of flavors ranging from classic vanilla to green tea to chocolate mint. K went to Vegas on a trip with the boys recently and brought home a box of macaroons as a souvenir.

The food:

The box contained 6 different flavors of macaroons: strawberry, chocolate mint, lemon, vanilla, coffee and chocolate. All were delicious, especially the chocolate mint and coffee. French macaroons are completely different than the classic coconut macaroon. These French macaroons are made of almond paste and meringue, creating a soft, chewy consistency. The cookies are sandwiched together using either a cream or butter. We actually nursed the macaroons for about 4 days and they were still delicious. Can’t wait to go to NY to pick up some more!

Nothing Bundt Cake - Las Vegas

There are 2 things you should bring back from Vegas. One is a Capastrami sandwich from Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop and the other is a bundt cake from Nothing Bundt Cake. There’s a whole lot more, but these 2 are my fav.

The food:

My sis-in-law was kind enough to bring home 3 whole bundt cakes (about 4-5″ diameter) for us to try. Between 4 people, we ate it all.

She brought home 3 flavors - a marble, chocolate chocolate and a lemon. All were very moist and sticky. Unanimously, the marble was the favorite since it was less sweet compared to the other 2. The frosting to cake ratio was perfect.

I’d say this was better than any cupcake I’ve ever had. THAT’s a big statement.

Bill's Gamblin' Hall & Saloon: The Victorian Room - Las Vegas

Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall & Saloon: The Victorian Room

I’m going to title this, How I Got My Man Card Back. Now, how I lost it is a whole other story, but the important thing is, it’s back. Â I may have lost it again after going to Rotunda, but I grabbed it back on a recent trip to Kentucky Fried Chicken. Â I’ll tell you guys all about it later.

While taking a stroll on the Vegas strip, I noticed a huge sign that read “T-BONE STEAK AND EGGS - $5.99 - 12am - 6am”. Â I thought to myself, Gee! Â What a deal! Â I kept talking about it with my travel companions, and we committed to taking them up on the offer.

The Scene

The Victorian Room is in the back of Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall and Saloon.  Walking through the casino, you could tell you weren’t having martinis in the glitzy lounge-singer-esque side of Vegas, instead you were knockin’ back some brewskies with the starving college version.  The dining room itself looks like it’s been around for a long time.  The red vinyl booths were burgundy and worn, unlike the bright red booths shown on their website advertisement.  The clientèle after midnight consisted of broke gamblers, drunk night club patrons that wanted to end the night and our table, the smart penny pinching group of Asian dudes looking for some cheap meat.  It was kind of funny, seeing the table next to us, where a guy was tipping his head up-and-down due to heavy inebriation.  Our waiter took forever and our forks were mostly dirty.  Definitely a place to test your immune system.

The Food

All real manly men are in constant search for meat. Â I… can’t grow a full beard or chest hair, so I only search for meat when I’m in need of it. Â You can kind of say I’m a Cullen in a manly men’s world (Author’s Note: It’s comments like that, where I lose my man card).

Steak and Eggs - I ordered a Medium Steak because with prices like that I’d really have to question the quality and cleanliness of the meat. Â The meat was tough, but it was saved by all the butter they used to cook it. Â Everything is better with butter. Â Pour some A1 on that sucker and we’re golden. Â The Eggs are cooked to order, so I had “Over Easy”, that tasted the way Denny’s eggs would taste. Â Now the part that really made this meal awesome, the side surprises. Hash Browns and Toast. Â I had no clue that a $6 meal could gather so many different things onto my plate. Â All I can say is, if you want something affordable really late at night, and you are poor and/or cheap, this is an awesome place to try.

Earl of Sandwich - Las Vegas

I just took a recent boys trip to Las Vegas and had the opportunity to sample some of the “Good Eats” on the strip. You’ve already heard about everyone’s favorite Vegas sandwich shop, Capriotti’s. Â It was our second day here after a long night of losing lots of money for fun, and I was trying to wake up my travel companions, Gorilla, Ken, Quagmire, Wawwy, and JC. Â Since some of us stayed at Planet Hollywood, we were looking for a quick lunch. Â We found the Earl of Sandwich while wandering the casino area and caught a glimpse of a video advertisement that said “The World’s Greatest Hot Sandwich.”

The Scene

You’ll find the Earl of Sandwich in the Miracle Mile Shops mall connected to Planet Hollywood. Â It looks like Mcdonalds but fancier. Â If I were you, I wouldn’t expect much out of this place.

The Food

I had the Earl’s club Sandwich. Â Roasted Turkey, Smoked Bacon, Swiss Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato, and “Sandwich Sauce” on an Artisan baked loaf. Â As good as that sounds, I found this sandwich to be good but not great. Â What really made this sandwich good was the bacon. Â It felt like I had just picked up the best fridge sandwich from 7-11. Â I tried some of The Full Montagu which consists of Roast Beef, Turkey, Swiss Cheese, Cheddar, Lettuce, Tomato and Mustard. Â That sandwich was mediocre at best. Â Nothing to really write home about.
