Flying Fish Grill - Half Moon Bay

Rating: ♣♣♣

Sam and I used to love trying all the fish taco joints in the Bay Area. Every time someone would mention a place with fried fish tacos that they loved, we’d make it a point to try it out. Such was the case with Flying Fish Grill. I had a coworker that constantly raved about how he would take his sons to the best fish tacos he’s ever had in Half Moon Bay. So, of course we had to try.

Making the trip to Half Moon Bay isn’t difficult, you can either take the 92 or the 1. We were tempted to stop by Barbara’s Fish Trap for some quick Clam Chowder, but fought the urge and continued on. Finding the place is a little tricky, it’s at the south side, end of the 92 where it meets the 1. The sun was shining, and the tummy’s were rumbling. We ordered the Fried Calamari, Sweet Potato Fries and Fish Tacos.

The Fried Calamari was crispy, and seemed extra battered. With a quick spritz of lemon and a dip into the tartar sauce, the fried calamari were ready for Kingston consumption. I wouldn’t say these were the most amazing pieces of calamari I’ve ever had, and so would not recommend them. If you know what Sweet Potato Fries taste like, then you wouldn’t be missing much.

Finally, we ended with the fish tacos. Sam ordered 1, and I ordered 2. Cod is the type of fish we ordered, although you can also choose Salmon. I actually liked the way they fried the fish, it wasn’t overly battered, and it was the right crispiness. They place on a bed of shredded cabbage inside a small corn tortilla. Pictured is Sam’s, plain Jane fish taco. I actually ordered the Grande, which included Salsa, Guacamole, and cheese. Definitely good, but not the best, I still reserve that for Nick’s Crispy Tacos.

Note: They are moving to a new location this summer at 211 San Mateo Road!

Movie Bites Review - Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Rated: ♣♣♣♣♣

In the year 1989, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade hit the theaters and earned a whopping $50 Million the first week of its release. I didn’t watch it when it first came out, but I’ve loved the entire Indiana Jones series (okay, maybe not the fourth one so much) since I first watched them as a kid. And today, it was on Spike TV and I couldn’t help but enjoy the movie all over again. They don’t really make movies like that anymore, which makes me really sad. You have all the action, and the subtle hints of comedy. I’m going to do a quick summary, so if you haven’t watched it… wait… if you haven’t watched it, I’m very disappointed in you right now. Stop reading, and watch it NOW!

The movie started with Indiana Jones as a kid, and shows why he loves adventures, hates snakes, and respects the proper ownership of ancient artifacts. Jones is hired by an art collector to find the Holy Grail, which Indiana’s father was searching for until he went missing. The adventure takes them through Italy, Germany, and the Middle East. Which results in a great mythical puzzle at the end.

Seriously, I am going to have to watch the entire series all over again. And while we’re at it, let’s make sure we all watch Cowboy’s and Aliens! Hopefully, there won’t be any crystal skulls.

1300 on Fillmore - San Francisco

Rated: ♣♣

If you haven’t noticed, we love Southern food. 1300 Fillmore is a Soul Food joint buried in the Western Addition. Don’t mistaken this part of Fillmore for the trendier strip in Pac Heights, this is the “soulful” Japantown neighbor where some of the best Jazz joints are (Yoshi’s). The low light, dark brown interior, and vintage-modern jazz revival decor give this place a beautifully comfortable atmosphere where a couple on a date, a hungry family or an elegant party with friends can mingle. Tonight we celebrated two birthdays, my dad’s and my brother’s.

When you first arrive, you are greeted by a very large (and heavy) front door into a boxed room that’s meant to keep the cold air out. That room leads into the main dining area, where the host gathers your party to seat you. Our entire party had not arrived yet, so we were invited to wait at the Bar and Lounge area. K helped my mom pick the Macallan Scotch to surprise my dad. Once the rest of our party arrived, the host gathered our party and sat us far in the back next to the kitchen.

The dinner included complimentary triangle shaped cornbread. For appetizers we ordered the Hush Puppies and Fat Fries. LOVED the cornbread and the hush puppies. I would’ve been happy stopping there.

K ordered the Southern Exposed Black Skillet Fried Organic Chicken. He was really excited for some crispy, delicious fried chicken and didn’t really look at the menu for an alternative. Boy was he disappointed. It was good fried chicken, but could have been better. The meat was dry, and not flavorful.

I had the special of the day which were the Baby Back Ribs. These were dry ribs. No sauce. But, it also tasted like they forgot to add the dry rub. It was almost flavorless. I had to dunk each piece into the the sauce for flavor. The ribs came with a side of mac-n-cheese which I was too full to eat at the restaurant. I had the intention to take it home with my leftovers, but the restaurant didn’t pack it for me! I was so disappointed the next day at lunch when I saw 2 bare ribs in my box with nothing else.

For dessert, K and I shared the Banana Cream Pie with a lime caramel sauce. It was the most interesting version I’ve ever had, but delicious! Creamy pudding, chunky bananas and a thin crust. It definitely doesn’t beat Tartine’s, but I still licked my plate clean!

Check out what else we ate!
