I’ve been dying to try Mitchell’s Young Coconut “Buco” ice cream ever since it made it on 7×7’s Big Eat SF list. I used to come here all the time when my brother worked here over 10 years ago. Now, it’s super packed because of the local buzz.

The scene:

Mitchell’s is always busy. Every time I drive by the storefront, there is a line out the door. When you come, you pick a number and wait to be called and then you can taste the array of interesting flavors. Trust me. It’s worth the wait.

The food:

After tasting several flavors (yuzu - like a lemon, ube - taro, mango, etc), K and I both decided to share a scoop of the buco (young coconut) ice cream. The only reason why we shared was because we had Bi-Rite only a few days before.

Dispersed throughout the creamy buco ice cream are tiny morsels of young coconut. If you’ve never had young cocount before, it tastes like coconut (because it is), but the texture is more like gelatin. I’m big on texture when it comes to ice cream, and more often than not, a crunch from a nut or even a chocolate chip in an ice cream can really throw off the balance for me.

All-in-all, Mitchell’s is a childhood favorite that I’ll always come back to.

I still don’t understand why you and K had to share 😛 Have you tried Humphrey’s yet? I went there for the first time last month..eccentric flavors there, too….

I had maple walnut and vietnamese coffee ice cream when I went to Humphrey’s..I also sampled a bunch, including one that was like Thai lime chili or something. I don’t know what in that enticed me to try it, but I was not a fan. Haha! I guess that’s what samples are for! 😀
