I saw an article on the Oatmealicious cookie at Cups and Cakes Bakery earlier this week on SF Weekly and forced my boyfriend to get one for me since he was on jury duty near by.

On Thursday, he picked me up from work with a big pink box full of cupcakes! (They were out of the Oatmealicous cookie.) Aw, thanks K!

The food:

I’ve never seen cupcakes like these before. Most designer cupcakes are perfectly symmetrical, but not these. They had a real homemade look and came in little paper cups rather than the usual cupcake wrapper. Their signature is the little slit on the side of the cup, so you can easily tear the wrapper off. K bought 6 cupcakes and the kind owner gave us a mini red velvet for free. We ended up eating the cupcakes over the next 2 days, and the cakes were still moist - a real plus. Cupcakes are $2.75 each.

Cloud 9 - I totally understand why they call it Cloud 9. This cupcake is made of a sticky and chewy angel food cake topped with a fluffy marshmallow frosting. The frosting is a little too sweet than what I’m used to, but supposedly it’s only 150 calories so it’s A-OK with me.

Cherry Soda - This one was alright. Again, too sweet for my taste. I have no idea what kind of cake they use for this. I’m guessing a caramel? The frosting had a hint of cherry soda flavor.

Vanilla & Chocolate - These are 2 separate cupcakes, but I’m just going to do a combined review. These 2 were the prettiest of the bunch. The vanilla is topped with a big swirl of vanilla frosting and a mini vanilla wafer cookie. The chocolate was topped with chocolate frosting and a chocolate chip. Both were really good. Moist cake, not too much frosting, not too sweet.

I’d like to come back to Cups and Cakes Bakery to try the Oatmealicious cookie. Two soft and chewy oatmeal cookies sandwiching cream cheese frosting and chocolate ganache. YUM. I’ve got to try one of those soon.

Walking to the Hall of Justice for jury duty has given me the opportunity to find hidden gems in SoMa. Â Such as the coffee bar hidden in the picture on the right. Â Do you see it? Â Look within that warehouse being remodeled, behind that yellow van. Â Ah, there it is. Â SightGlass! Â I walked by this area and saw all kinds of signs saying SightGlass, but I thought it was some kind of glass shop, until I finally took a good look inside.

The scene:

A full coffee bar, a standing table, and one bench are all that make up the current SightGlass coffee bar. Â There’s always a few people waiting in line or hanging out on the bench. Â Behind the bar is a bunch of curtains covering something going on in the back. Â Next to the bench is more curtained off areas where you can hear all kinds of construction going on. Â I overheard them talking about remodeling the area for where the actual coffee shop is going to be. Â This must be their way of making money during the remodel to make up some of the costs.

The food:

I decided to order the Spice Infused Iced Tea. It was a nice and relatively warm day, although it’s been raining all week. Â The cup was pretty small, and the coffee was stronger than the watery Starbucks substance I normally get at work. Â The Spices were definitely very fragrant. Â I recommend adding some creamer in it. Â It came out to be $3.

Palomino - San Francisco

There is a happy hour every night of the week in San Francisco’s Financial District. I have no idea how people find the energy and time to attend these things after work with their co-workers. K and I had some friends in the area, so we decided to to go Palomino.

The scene:

Palomino offers happy hour all day everyday, which explains why it’s always packed. Service was pretty mediocre. The indoor portion of the restaurant was completely packed, so we had to sit outside on the patio. It was about 50 degrees out and the waiters couldn’t turn on the heat lamps. It’s also pretty tough to flag down a server when they’re this busy.

The food:

We went for the Happy Hour. For K and myself, total came to $12 including tax and tip. Pizzas are $5, other appetizers range from $4-7 and drinks are $4-5.

Potatoes and Gorgonzola - Waffle cut fries topped with bits of gorgonzola and gorgonzola sauce. These were so good the first 5 minutes it was at our table. Becuase it was so cold, the fries cooled down right away.

Sausage and Mushroom Pizza - Palomino’s serves the thinnest pizza I’ve ever had. The dough is so thin, almost like a cracker. The sauce is nice and tomatoey topped with rustic mushrooms and Italian sausage. Yum! Too bad it got cold quickly because of the weather.

Palomino’s a great place to catch up with friends. The location is great, street parking is pretty easy after 6pm, and food is cheap. I’d come again when it gets warmer.

Yogen Fruz - San Francisco

I am one of the many followers of the frozen yogurt (fro-yo) craze. I like my yogurt plain and tart with tons of mochi on top. There are a couple of good fro-yo places near my work that I visit quite often for quick lunches. One of which is Yogen Fruz.

The scene:

Yogen Fruz is a yogurt stand in the Embarcadero 3 building in San Francisco. What’s unique about the Canadian yogurt shop is that you can create your own flavor of yogurt. They have an assortment of fruit and syrups you can choose from and they will mix into a plain tart yogurt. In addition to that, they have another section of toppings you can pick from. Special mixes they offer include Key Lime Pie and Chocolate Almond.

The food:

I got the plain acai berry frozen yogurt. This one is actually pre-mixed and comes straight out of the fro-yo machine. The yogurt has little pieces of acai berry pulp mixed into a plain tart yogurt. It almost tastes like blueberries or raspberries.

There’s an urban myth that acai berries are a superfood with anti-aging and weight loss properties, but there’s no study that has proven true. It is an anti-oxidant though, so it’s undoubtedly good for you.

My friend at Fro-Yo Lover came with me as well. She got my second favorite which is the Key Lime Pie—key lime yogurt mixed with pie crumbs.
